The Celebration of the Polish Soldier is commemorated by the New Republic of Poland in memory of the battles defending the motherland in the year of 1920. In the early morning hours of August 15th, 1920, the 21st Mountain Division began their legendary counter-offensive which lead to the scattering of the western front of the Russian army, under the command of Mikhail Tukhachevsky. The Holiday of the Polish Soldier was later sanctioned by order of Gen. Stanislaw Szeptycki, on the 4th of August, 1923. Quoting his speech: “On this day, the army and citizens honor the qualities of duty which are embodied and expressed in the common soldier. In the anniversary of the division of the Bolshevik attack on Warsaw, shines the memory of those who fought with the enemy for unity and freedom of Poland.” The holiday of the Polish Soldier was never reviewed by any law. It was celebrated during the second world war in the Western Polish Armed Forces and the Polish Army until 1947. In the years to come it became better known as the Day of the Polish Army, to commemorate the battle of the 1st Infantry Division in Lenino under the name of Tadeusz Kościuszko. This battle was one of the most significant to the polish army during the second world war.

W następnych latach zaniechano jego obchodów i ustanowiono Dzień Wojska Polskiego (12 października) - upamiętniając w ten sposób chrzest bojowy 1 Dywizji Piechoty im.
